Project Spotlight- Southeast Ohio Historic Center
Nestled in the heart of Athens, the Southeast Ohio History Center stands as a guardian of the region’s rich cultural and natural heritage. With a mission to collect, preserve, and share the stories of Southeast Ohio, the center offers thought-provoking exhibits that ensure every visit reveals something new about the area’s vibrant and storied past.
Now, thanks to a thoughtful renovation led by Wolf Creek Contracting, the historic building is entering a new era—one that blends modern accessibility with timeless preservation.
The renovation, currently underway, focuses on creating an enhanced visitor experience while maintaining the architectural integrity of the century-old structure. Inside, the center’s exhibit area is being transformed into a fully ADA-accessible space. Updates include push-button door access, a new code-compliant brass handrail with sleek glass panels at the balcony level, and an ADA-compliant ramp to provide entry to the downstairs bathroom. A new accessible stage will also be constructed, opening the space for inclusive community events and performances. The team will work to restore all the existing plaster damage on the walls & cover them with fresh coats of paint.
Outside, Wolf Creek Contracting is bringing thoughtful updates to the building’s exterior while honoring its historical character. The project includes constructing new, code-compliant entrance stairs using the building’s original limestone treads, complemented by brick pavers at the top landing to echo the building’s historic aesthetic. A touch of fresh landscaping will complete the look, subtly enhancing the building’s curb appeal.
Throughout the renovation, preserving the building’s historical elements has remained a top priority. From the limestone steps to the vintage wood trim, every update is being made with a deep respect for the structure’s past and a clear vision for its future.
As the Southeast Ohio History Center prepares to unveil its new and improved spaces, the community can look forward to a revitalized cultural hub—one that remains deeply rooted in the past yet fully equipped to serve the future.
Whether you are a local history buff, a curious traveler, or a member of the community looking for a welcoming place to gather, the center’s upcoming transformation promises to make history more accessible and engaging than ever before.
